Perched on a steep lot in Jonestown, this project presented a dual challenge: how to create a multifunctional, inviting outdoor space ideal for entertaining, while respecting the area's strict Dark Sky lighting ordinances. The homeowner wanted it all—a cozy fireplace, a pizza oven, a bocce ball court, gathering areas, and pathways connecting the entire experience—without overwhelming the compact, sloped terrain or compromising on nighttime serenity. Additionally, the property needed to balance open areas for guests with fenced zones for the homeowner’s dogs.
To bring this ambitious vision to life, we designed a landscape that flows effortlessly across varying elevations. The centerpiece is a custom-built fireplace and pizza oven combo, providing both warmth and culinary functionality for evening get-togethers. Nearby, a full-sized bocce ball court invites play, while a shaded pergola creates a cool retreat for relaxing during the day. We wove the entire space together with thoughtfully placed walking paths, allowing guests to navigate the steep site with ease. For nighttime use, we implemented subtle, downcast lighting that enhances visibility without disrupting the natural darkness—fully compliant with Dark Sky standards. Native, low-maintenance Texas plants line the landscape, contributing to the rustic beauty while minimizing upkeep. Smart zoning created a seamless division between dog-friendly areas and guest spaces, preserving both function and aesthetics across the property.
